Notes learners sent back

These are written from conversations and emails after sittings at the Dongnae-gu room. They name the chapter, the snag, and what was still awkward afterward.

I came because my nephew kept saying account and I could not tell whether he meant a bank account. By the third Tuesday I could point to owner, lamports, and data on the card. The pace was brisk, and the rent sitting felt short. I wanted another week on the arithmetic. Hana stayed after and marked the example in my notebook, which is the only reason that chapter stuck.

Week four was the one I almost skipped. I kept mixing the program with the account that stores its bytes. Minjae drew two boxes on scrap paper and made me say which box the signature checks. I still have that scrap in the notebook.

Elliot teaches English in Busan and had been reading Solana notes on the tram for a month before he took a seat in the spring 2025 series. He could define a keypair. He could not keep a program separate from the account that holds the program's bytes. Every time the note said owner, he pictured a person.

Week four is the programs sitting. Minjae Park took a scrap from the back of the pack and drew two boxes. One box was labeled in Elliot's own handwriting after Minjae refused to write the words for him: program account. The other: data account. Minjae asked which box a signature is checked against when the instruction runs. Elliot pointed at the wrong box, then corrected himself before anyone else spoke.

He kept the scrap. In his note to the room a month later he said the rest of the series was easier once those two boxes stayed different. He still finds rent arithmetic fiddly and booked his included desk hour for that alone, which is what the hour is for.

The rent line in the margin

Soo-jin keeps books for a clinic in Dongnae-gu. She joined the autumn 2025 desk because her nephew was deploying a small program and she wanted to follow his sentences at Sunday lunch. She did not want a career change. She wanted the nouns.

Accounts and signatures went steadily. Week five, rent and space, did not. The group calculated one rent-exempt figure, and Soo-jin's total was off by a factor of ten because she treated SOL and lamports as the same unit. There was no second week on the calendar. She said so, plainly, while people were putting on coats.

Hana reopened the example after the others left and marked the lamport line in Soo-jin's notebook. Soo-jin later wrote that the series would have felt unfinished without those extra minutes, and that she would have preferred the rent chapter to be longer in the first place. The room has not stretched week five into two sittings; the follow-up hour remains the place for that arithmetic. Her nephew, she reported, now gets corrected when he says balance without saying lamports.
